Carbon Reduction Policy

Carbon Reduction Policy

Introduction

Both society and business must adapt to the undeniable reality of climate change. What we do now and in the future must be addressed to mitigate our impact on the planet.

As a business, we have a duty to do the right thing, both in our operations and on our projects. At Demolition Services, we use our skills and expertise to overcome environmental challenges and make the necessary changes to protect the planet from further damage.

We take environmental matters seriously. To ensure adherence to high standards, we have established quality and environmental management systems that are certified by an accredited body to ISO9001:2015 and ISO14001:2015. As part of these accredited systems we identify, assess and address environmental impacts across all aspects of our operations.

This document outlines how we are progressing with our carbon reduction journey. We are committed to regularly reporting on our activities and holding ourselves accountable.

We are on a route map to net zero carbon through a number of targets including the following:

  1. Targeting net zero emissions across all our activities by 2050
  2. Switch site fuel from red diesel to HVO
  3. The switching of site fuel from red diesel to HVO (second generation biofuel)

The climate crisis presents both our greatest challenge but also an opportunity as we strive to deliver solutions that benefit our planet. We are fully committed to working towards a better future.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan

Demolition Services understands that climate change is the most important issue of our lifetime and the single greatest threat to our planet. The urgency to address the issue is underscored by the latest report from the United Nation’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which provides a thorough examination of the physical science of climate change.

As part of our commitment to decarbonise our operations, we are tackling all aspects of our services to the industry and working with our supply chain to create the best solutions to offer to our clients.

This carbon reduction plan provides an overview of Demolition Services’ carbon performance and a strategy of how we will tackle each aspect of our organisation and our client offering, to find innovative solutions to achieve our targets, which provide focus and direction to achieve our long-term 2050 Net Zero target.

Demolition Services is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050.

What is my Carbon Footprint made of? Carbon emissions are divided into three different scopes:

Scope 1. All direct emissions from the activities of an organisation or under their control (fuel combustion on-site, fleet vehicles, and air-conditioning leaks).

Scope 2. Emissions created during the production of the energy purchased and used by the organisation (UK electricity, heat and steam).

Scope 3. All other indirect emissions from activities of the organisation originated in sources that they do not own or control (business travel, procurement, waste, and water).

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline emissions are a record of the greenhouse gases that have been produced in the past and were produced prior to the introduction of any strategies to reduce emissions.

Baseline emissions are the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured.

Baseline Year: 2020

Additional Details relating to the Baseline Emissions calculations

Demolition Services has measured carbon emissions since 2020. The data for the emissions sources required by PPN06/21 has been drawn out from a verified data set.

Emissions data have not been gathered in prior years, therefore we have selected 2020 as our baseline

Emissions reduction targets

In order to continue our progress to achieving Net Zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

  • Demolition Services Ltd is targeting net zero emissions across all its activities by This target includes the full activity of our supply chain working on our behalf. This target includes all emission sources covered in PPN06/21
  • We are targeting that carbon emissions will decrease 50% by 2030 to 1192 tCO2e
  • Our targets have been inputted and will be tracked against these targets in the graph below:

Carbon Reduction Projects

Completed Carbon Reduction Initiatives

The following environmental management measures and projects have been completed or implemented since the 2020 baseline. The carbon emission reduction achieved by these schemes equate to 150 tCO2e to date, a 6% reduction against the 2020 baseline.

Carbon reduction initiatives implemented to date:

  • LED lighting to offices and PIR sensors
  • Flexible working policy
  • Working from home where appropriate
  • Car / Van share initiatives

Driving down our use of Diesel

Diesel consumption accounts for over 90% of our energy use and carbon footprint. Over time, low carbon technologies will evolve to power our plant and we are participating in developing this through involvement in bodies like the Manufacturers/industry forums. In the meantime, we will aim to deliver our policy by improving the energy efficiency of our plant and machinery, we are investing in energy efficient technologies as they become available and through good energy management. We will also reduce our carbon emissions by purchasing low carbon energy, such as electricity generated from renewable sources and biodiesel, where this is possible and cost effective.

Action plan for the Demolition Services Office

Our fixed office location will be powered by solar panels from 2028.

Energy efficiency measures we have put in place:

  • We have rolled out LED lighting
  • Building Management systems
  • Electric charging points for electric vehicles
  • Energy awareness programme has been developed and training given to all staff
  • Commercial fleet upgrade programme with all vehicle fleet to have Euro VI engines
  • Green travel plans including cycle to work programme benefits for staff
  • Exploring alternative office energy sources to move to renewable energy providers
  • Mandatory use of eco cabins and plant on the projects we undertake
  • Site Waste Management Plans and stringent selection of third-party waste companies to recycle project waste

In the future we will implement further measures including:

  • Net zero site set up policy
  • The switching of site fuel from red diesel to HVO (second generation biofuel)
  • Zero carbon supply chain collaboration initiative
  • Implementation of zero waste strategy
  • Development and launch of biodiversity net gain strategy

Demolition Services is fully committed to minimising our impact on climate change and mitigating the business risks climate change presents by developing plans to manage them. These are underpinned by our ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System.

Circular Economy

In the UK, construction, demolition and excavation account for 60% of material waste generation, therefore, Demolition Services views every building we demolish as a potential asset to reuse.

To us, sustainability in demolition means looking at the process of dismantling and deconstruction; exploring how much of the value of arising materials can be utilised at their highest value for as long as possible.

Sustainability for the demolition industry means looking at the process of decommissioning and dismantling these installations, as well as exploring how much of the arising materials can be reused on site to construct hardstanding and backfilling, or used off site in con-crete batching plants ready for the next skyscraper or power station.

By segregating all waste and ensuring each waste type, as well as steel material, is reused or recycled, we’ll reduce the use of mining, of raw materials, and cut energy use for processing, transporting and fabricating materials.

Everything has a lifecycle and this applies to buildings no longer fit-for-purpose. A key strategy we use is to view all building constituents as potential assets; while not everything may be reusable, each and every part should be a valuable resource for future use on or offsite.

The circular economy although lacking in official definition is considered to be an opposing concept of traditional linear sustainable ideas in that reference is made to the reuse of a product or material in a view to prevent it coming to the end of its life.

We believe that a circular approach (continual life cycle of a product) as opposed to a linear sustainable approach (extended life of a product) is more beneficial to world in which we live.

Circular economy and carbon reduction are therefore considered to be intrinsically linked. The circular economy concept is readily adopted by Demolition Services as well as industries offering financial benefits in the reduction in raw material use and reduced disposal costs.

Reducing our Carbon Emissions

Demolition Services has implemented a company-wide strategy which sets out our commitment to reduce our carbon emissions.

We will achieve our target through:

  • Setting interim annual targets to reduce energy consumption or improve efficiency, will implement action plans to achieve our annual targets, and include the necessary budgets and resources to enable investment in cost-effective technical The plans will be signed off by the board
  • A Company Energy Forum meeting regularly to coordinate activities, review performance and share best practice reporting to the board on a six-monthly basis or sooner if changes are
  • Monitoring and analysing energy consumption data for premises and vehicles to establish performance and identify trends and opportunities to further reduce consumption or achieve efficiency
  • Training drivers to operate plant and machinery as energy efficiently as Drivers and vehicles are regularly monitored to establish benchmarks and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Maintaining vehicles and energy-intensive plant and equipment in an energy/fuel efficient manner;
  • Ensuring energy efficiency is a key component of major capital expenditure projects, especially those relating to vehicles, premises, plant and
  • Raising awareness of our energy efficiency targets amongst staff.
  • Lobbying plant manufacturers to make their products more energy
